The Effects of Changing Temperatures

The end of February, as some may call it, but for everyone who lives in the Northeastern/Midwestern part of the United States, false Spring. It is the time between the Winter and Spring where it can be 70o one day and 32o the next. These times can be very difficult when it comes to getting ready in the morning. Whether you want to wear a jacket or not, or wear a winter coat or a light jacket.

Working outside in these conditions can be very difficult, freezing temperatures in the morning to warm temperatures in the afternoon. Dressing for the weather is extremely crucial as the weather can negatively affect a person’s senses; sight, smelling, and touch.

A few safety tips to better prepare for the weather:

    • Always dress with outer layers loose and inner layers tighter when the temperature is colder.
    • Do not over bundle.
    • Dress in layers that are easier to take off as the weather gets warmer to minimize sweat.
    • Avoid getting your clothing wet.
    • Wear head protection, this will increase the warmth in the mornings.
    • Be sure to protect your feet, your feet will feel the effects of the temperature first.
    • Be sure to keep an eye on the weather in the mornings so you can prepare for the temperature changes throughout the day.
    • Gloves are very important, most often a thin pair of wool gloves under a pair of leather gloves will provide best protection and take a layer of gloves off as the temperatures change.
